This page contains 36 selected signed images and 5 composites of
Alaskan Coastal Brown Bears taken at Silver Salmon Creek, Alaska.

Images are 1500 x 1075 pixels including title block, except for the three images
with a 5x4 aspect ratio, which are about 1450 x 1150 pixels and have no title block.
Composites are either 1500 pixels wide or 1200 pixels tall (size stated below images).

Alaskan Brown Bear X2900

A Coastal Brown Bear walking down the creek into the lowering sun.
The sun goes down in early August at about 9:30 PM, but it never gets
completely dark (they call it the Land of the Midnight Sun for this reason).

Grizzly Reflection HS2760

A Brown Female crossing Silver Salmon Creek. This female climbed the bank
and topped it within about 10 feet of us. I’d say that was a rather exciting few minutes.

Grizzly Male Crossing Creek X2868

An enormous 1200 pound, 7 foot tall boar crosses Silver Salmon Creek
just before sunset. This is the same boar shown standing at the bottom of the page.

A 7 foot tall, 1200 pound boar clears out the other bears as he
lumbers down the path and across the creek to his favorite fishing spot.

These two images were taken at the mouth of Silver Salmon Creek
at 10 PM, about a half hour after the sun went down. There is still a fair
amount of light considering the time, but I had to open the lens up to f/2.8.

(without shooting a considerable part of that time in the dark).

Grizzly Secrets X3177

One of the Golden Female’s Cubs having a little fun while Mom
teaches the timid cub how to fish. This one is the adventurous cub.

Grizzly Cub Closeup X3227

The timid cub following Mom and the adventurous cub, who are on
the other side of the creek. This guy walked right past us and caused a
little excitement when we realized that we were between Mom and the cub.
That could have been a problem, but it turned out all right (Mom is used to this).

Here is a shot of Mom chasing down a fish. You can see the water
disturbed above the fish at the left of the frame a few feet ahead of her.

she was either expressing exhaustion, or her disdain for the photographer.
