This is an extensive Portfolio presentation of the Sepulveda Wildlife Refuge.

In the lowest part of the San Fernando Valley, where the 405 and 101 freeways meet,
this wetlands refuge is a major stop over for migrating birds, and is home to a number
of species that live here year-round. A large number of the images in this page have
not been posted elsewhere. Some images are in the Wildlife Studies section, and
some are from other pages. All images have been re-processed for this page.

Red-Winged Blackbird X4089

An extremely challenging subject, the Red-Winged Blackbird is difficult to capture with
acceptable detail as it is often much darker than the background or other objects in the
scene. To achieve a correct exposure and still yield detail in the bird requires serious
attention both at the time the shot was taken, and even more important when the
shot is processed. I am displaying several shots of this bird as satisfactory
images taken in ambient light are rarely displayed for these reasons.
Most decent shots I have seen use flash to bring the detail out of
the bird, and often the flash destroys the character of the light.

I changed my shooting angle to reduce the green reflection off of the water.
It gave a different look... not necessarily better, but different.
